"Simple Complexity" explores the "simple," ever-repeating patterns in all "complex" processes and ideas. The notion that all complex systems are made up of smaller contributing elemental properties is present in everything from the natural world to the refinement of human invention to the evolution of species. In fact, the very cosmos is the most profound argument for the theory.
When the concept is applied to music it implies that all seemingly complex musical organization is but an amalgam of constituent parts; all of which have roots in simpler forms that, when combined, make up a magnificently greater whole. Conversely, when reduced to their constituent parts, even these "simple" elements stand out as independent entities worthy of wonder in their own right.
This, my latest recording, explores my fascination with the cyclic, ever-repeating patterns that constitute all great works of music; from J. S. Bach to primitive tribal rhythms to the modern purveyors of electronic synthesis and ambient minimalism - which is more than occasionally characterized by protracted repetition of figurations, obsessive structural rigor, and often a pulsing, hypnotic sensibility.
I'm usually more surprised by how complex simplicity is. - Alistair

i am gilgamesh
My first CD release; "I am Gilgamesh" is an aural interpretation of the world's oldest written story. An epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia dating to a time before the 18th century BC; The Epic of Gilgamesh is a hero story carrying the freight of many universal themes and is steeped in existential meaning-making. I chose to interpret this story in music because over the years it's resonated with my own life journey. The tracks bear the names of the various characters and highlights from the epic's narrative.
